What is Extrusion Welder
Extrusion welding is one of the processes used to weld thermoplastics and composite materials and was developed in the 1960s as a development of hot gas welding. It can be a manual or automated process. The process uses a welding head that has a hot air nozzle and an extruder that pushes the filler material out. The process requires heating the joining surfaces and adding molten or plasticized filler material by extruding it through a die.

Work to ensure safety.
How to Choose Extrusion Welder
Know Your Welding Method
First things first, you have to know how you're going to weld before buying a Extrusion Welder. Not all Extrusion Welder provide the means for multiple methods. There are multi-process Extrusion Welder that allow you to conduct TIG, MIG, and Stick welding. Some machines, on the other hand, will only allow for one or two types of welding. So, to make sure you've got the right gear for the task at hand, know which method you'll be carrying out with it.
Know What You Want To Weld
One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a welding method is the type of metal you're welding. If you're welding stainless steel, you have a variety of options as far as welding methods go; MIG, TIG, and Stick welding are all suitable choices. If you're going to be welding aluminum, then you should avoid using methods like stick welding. The reason for this is due to the various properties of each type of metal you can weld with. Some metals have different levels of durability, corrosiveness, and electrical conductivity than others.
Take Your Experience Into Account
All welding methods have their benefit, but they're not all so easy for novice welders to learn. If you're still a novice, we recommend starting off with MIG welding because it's easy to learn and provides you with a means of completing high-quality welds in ample time. We don't recommend jumping right into stick welding. That being said, you can certainly work your way up to it once you leave that novice stage. If you try to jump into a complex welding method without the right knowledge or experience, you'll most likely wind up with injuries and low-quality welds. We recommend avoiding both.
Think About the Price
The money you're willing to pay also plays a key role in buying the right Extrusion Welder. This section will show you how to buy the right machine at the right price. Keep in mind that you don't have to break the bank to get a Extrusion Welder, but these aren't $30 machines. Set a budget but do so realistically so you aren't buying low-quality machines solely for the cheaper price, which is an issue we'll dive deeper into later on.
Prioritizing Amperage and Voltage Is Essential
The amperage and voltage you need for your welds play a role in determining your budget. The more amperage (or“current”) you need, the more you'll have to spend on a machine. If you're welding thicker metals, you're going to need a machine that provides you with high amperage levels. Thin metals don't require quite as much power for completing quality welds.

Preparation Phase
Scrape the surface to remove the oxidized layer which always occurs on the outside of the plastic materials. You may also use a die grinder or similar tool to ensure you achieve at least 0.2mm of the surface removed. Failure to remove the oxidized layer will create a barrier between the surfaces to be welded.Do not use Grinding or Sanding / flap wheels as they tend to burn and leave deposit residue behind which can affect the success of the weld.
Heating & Welding Phase
The right heating temperature depends on the thermoplastic material being used. For example, polyethyleneusually falls between 220°C to 280°C depending on its type and grade of material. However they do vary, and it is always recommended to follow the manufacturer's guidelines.
Cooling Phase
Once you're done with the welding gun, allow the fusion joint to cool down without movement.Once cooled, inspect the joint to ensure no issues such as misalignment, gaps, burn marks or voids are present.Refer to the manufacturer's guide of the specific thermoplastic material you used, to know how much time is required to cool down. For polyethylene with welds 10 to 20mm thick, 10 minutes is sufficient. Note that the thicker the material, the more time is needed.Ensure you follow manufacturer guidelines relating to cool down and shut down of the extrusion welding gun, this supports longevity of your equipment.
How to Maintain Extrusion Welder
Keep It Covered When Not In Use
Using a cover is one of the most straightforward steps you can take to maintain your Extrusion Welder and often one of the most overlooked. In most fabrication environments, dust, grime, and metallic particles settle and adhere to almost every surface. Just as these can make you sick, they can seriously impair the proper function of your machine.
Turn Off The Gas And Purge Your System
Purging is a good habit to get into whenever you shut down your machine for the day. Turning off your gas bottle and purging the shielding gas from your machine and MIG gun will extend the life of hoses, fittings, valves, regulators, and solenoids and prevent the loss of costly gas if a leak happens to develop while you are away.
Hang It Up
When you finish working for the day, coil your MIG gun loosely and hang it up off the floor. Not only is this a good general practice for keeping your work area clean, but it will also prevent your MIG gun from becoming damaged when not in use and keep the liner from becoming kinked from being would too tightly.
Inspect The Ground Lead And Clamp
It can be easy to take ground leads and clamps for granted. We tend to assume that it’s doing its job if the clamp is touching the workpiece or table. The truth is that your ground lead and clamp serve a critical function in the welding process, and they need a little attention from time to time when doing Extrusion Welder maintenance.
Inspect The Cables
Cable checks are just as crucial for safety as it is for the proper function of your equipment. First, unplug your machine. Then start at the back and inspect the power cord for cuts, burn marks, cracks, and any other damage. Ensure that the plug is installed correctly and fits tightly into the socket.
Inspect Gas Hoses And Fittings
Ensure the shielding gas tank is properly secured. Turn on the tank valve and set the output flow rate, then shut off the tank. Inspect the tank and valve for visible damage. Do the same for the hoses, regulators, and fittings.Wait until at least fifteen minutes have elapsed and check the output gauge. If the reading is lower than initially set at, you have a leak. Fill a spray bottle with soapy water and begin spraying your fittings and hoses. You should see bubbles where the leak exists.
